Book Description

The arrival of a baby brings some of the biggest and most rapid changes that we ever experience.
Beginning with the decision to have a child and the factors that influence it, this book considers pregnancy and childbirth as a psychological event rather than a biological process. Jackie Ganley explores the fears and anxieties of prospective parents, and how these feelings change in the course of pregnancy. She tackles issues such as what it feels like to be in labour and addresses how the pain can be managed. Emotional recovery and the early days of parenting are also considered, with a look at baby basics such as feeding, sleeping, and interacting, as well as more complex reactions such as postnatal depression. Featuring case examples of real problems people have had, as well as discussion points and valuable 'Who can help?' sections, this indispensable book contains all you need to plan and make your own emotional journey through pregnancy and childbirth.

'The author's clinical and personal experience in my opinion provide a unique blend of professional expertise and life-experience ... a well-informed and psychologically-oriented self-help manual on parenting.' Professor Alan Carr, University College Dublin

Bicycle Repair

I doubt very very much about it.

Roughly
50% of the warez ebooks I've seen here concern programming,
30% are related to other computer aspects
10% about sex
10% are novels, or general topics

It's even tough to ask for warez ebooks about audio (Cubase, Cakewalk etc), or piano/guitar teaching.

I've learned to change/patch my bicycle tube, and adjusting the derailler by reading articles on the net such as:

How to Treat Fall Allergies Naturally

Allergies rage in the fall. In my case it could be because I moved to a different state or simply because I suffer from seasonal allergies. All I know is that with cold and flu season on the way, I need to get these allergies under control or else my immune system won't be able to fend off the latest winter bugs.

My allergies aren't bad enough to take allergy medication. In fact, I only took allergy medication once in my life. My immune system was destroyed from stress and I had mono at the time—now I try to take care of the problem naturally before it gets out of control.

When I wake up a little stuffy and I keep sneezing—I know it's time to pay attention to my allergies. This is the plan I follow.

Step1
My goal is to have 2 to 3 cups of green tea a day when trying to fight allergies. Green tea contains quercetin and some Vitamin C, both of which help block the histamine response that causes allergic symptoms.

Step2
In addition to the green tea, I take 500 mg of Vitamin C a day. I just take a capsule, but you can take it in powder form if you prefer. Vitamin C helps the quercetin in the green tea work better and also helps block the histamine response on its own.

Step3
It is very important for me to eat a healthy diet. This will supply the right nutrients to my body, which will help it be better equipped to handle the allergies. It will also give the Vitamin C and green tea a chance to work more effectively.

Step4
Local honey in its raw, unpasteurized state is one of the greatest weapons for dealing with allergies, especially in my case. I moved to a completely different climate than I lived in before, where there is new plant life. My body doesn't understand it. Eating local honey will give my body a chance to get to know the various pollens that are out there, because traces of them are left over in the honey. Once my body understands that these new things are not actually invaders, it won't release the histamine response.

How To Conserve Gas Easily

Cheap and Free Ways to Conserve Gasoline

In recent years the once simple task of fueling a vehicle has become an overwhelming burden in households around the world. The price per gallon of gas and the cost per barrel of crude oil continue to break all-time high records. While we may see slight relief from time to time with gas prices dropping a few cents during certain seasons or "off peak driving periods", it would be naive to think the price of a gallon of gas will ever drop to what it once was. In fact I think it would be safe to assume gas prices will continue to rise.

You may not be able to control gas prices, but you can control how much money you spend on gas. Conservation is the key, and with the tips below you can ease that pain at the pump and keep some cash in your wallet!

1. Walk Or Ride Your Bike As Often As Possible. Obviously if you are going on a family outing your Huffy probably won't accommodate all passengers. But maybe for that trip to the convenience store your bike or sneakers could do the trick. It's an easy way to conserve gas, and you'll get some exercise in the process. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

2. Maintain Your Car. A poorly maintained vehicle can reduce your MPG (miles per gallon) by 15% or more. You can easily conserve gas and save money when your car runs properly. The goal is to eliminate any unnecessary stress on your car's engine, which would cause it to consume gas at a much faster rate. Regular service check-ups with a professional mechanic will diagnose and allow you to repair any faults that may be wasting gas.

3. Get Rid Of The Junk In The Trunk! 200 pounds of junk will reduce your mileage by one mile per gallon. Don't store unnecessary items in your car's trunk or the bed of your truck. The only items you should carry in your vehicle are items needed for the particular trip, and of course an emergency kit.

4. Avoid Long Warm-Ups. 30-60 seconds is more than enough time to warm your car up, even on the coolest of days. Believe it or not, the engine will actually warm up faster while you are driving. If you're warming your car up for more than a minute; the oil companies thank you!

5. Use Cruise Control. If your vehicle has a cruise control feature, you will want to utilize it on long distance trips and highway driving. Cruise control will conserve about 5 to 10 percent of gas.

6. Fuel-Up While It Is Cool. During hotter periods of the day, gas will be less dense, and will be more likely to evaporate as you pump it. Always gas-up early in the morning or late in the evening. It may seem minute, but hey -- we wanna conserve gas, right? Trust me, it all adds up to money in your pocket.

7. Don't Idle. When traffic is at a stand-still, shut your engine off. If you just need to run into the store real quick, shut your engine off! Idling wastes about a quart of gas every 15 minutes. Stop unnecessary idling to easily conserve gas and save more money.

8. Keep A Steady Pace. Avoid rapid acceleration and sudden stops. Both will put stress on your vehicle's engine leading to wasted gas. Driving at a steady pace will reduce the energy needed to run your car's engine, making it an easy way to conserve gas and save money.

9. Inspect Your Gas Cap. If your vehicle's gas cap does not fit snugly, you may be losing fuel. Gasoline obviously is a gas, and will find the slightest of openings to escape. If you have any doubt that your gas cap is providing an air-tight seal, it's time for a replacement. A new gas cap will only cost you about 3 or 4 bucks, and will allow you to conserve gas for years to come.

10. Use Your Car's Air Conditioner Wisely. A common misconception is that running your vehicle's air conditioner will waste gas. In fact it will conserve gas when used appropriately. If you're just cruising around town on a warm day, shutting off your A.C. and rolling down the windows will easily conserve gas and save you money. But if you're on a long road trip or highway driving, you may actually conserve more gas by running the A.C. The reason: wind resistance. If you're traveling at a high speed with your windows down, the incoming wind resistance will act as unnecessary weight, and cause your vehicle to consume more fuel. So this one is really a judgment you must make according to the situation.

With no end to gas hikes in clear sight, conservation is the key. By putting the above practices to use and developing good habits, you can actually lower your gas costs even as gasoline prices continue to rise!

HOW TO CREATE A WATER GARDEN

Follow these easy steps to create this beautiful addition to any garden.

1) SELECT a site, preferably in the sun. Gather your materials.

2) PLACE the container on the ground. Adding an inch or so of water can help determine if the container is level.

3) LET the pond sit a few days to allow chlorine to evaporate from city water or oxygen to infiltrate (for oxygen-deficient well water).

4) ADD plants. They may be in pots or planted in a layer of sand in the bottom of the tank.

5) CINDER blocks, bricks, or pots can be used to regulate at what depth your potted plant should be.

6) ADD fish. Place a bag of fish into the pond, adding pond water every few minutes to the bag to help the fish adjust. Release after 30 minutes.

How to Disable the Windows Messenger Service

Back in the days of mainframe computing, and WAY before the days of instant messaging as we know it, the folks at computer centers needed a way to send emergency text messages to everyone announcing things like

THE PRINT CENTER CLOSES IN 15 MINUTES! PLEASE PICK UP YOUR PRINT JOBS IMMEDIATELY.

or

SQUADRONS OF SQUIRRELS SPOTTED IN THE VICINITY OF THE SEEBECK COMPUTER CENTER! YOU WOULD BE WISE TO IMMEDIATELY SAVE YOUR WORK AS WE WILL SOON BE PLUNGED INTO SQUIRREL-INDUCED DARKNESS.

So, built into mainframe operating systems like VM/CMS and UNIX are commands like TELL and WRITE that let you broadcast a simple text message to a specific user or group of users. [And you get special karma points if you ever used these commands to spook newbies.

Windows has a similar, built-in feature called the "Windows Messenger Service." Now this is NOT to be confused with "Microsoft Messenger" or "MSN Messenger," Microsoft's free instant messaging program (a la AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, or IRC.) WINDOWS Messenger Service is a way for mainframe and network administrators to broadcast an emergency text message to all users.

The Windows Messenger Service is, by default, enabled in Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP (Home and Professional), and Windows 2003.

And it's about as useless as giving a job application to my brother.

The problem is that the Windows Messenger Service can be used by unscrupulous spammers to send you an untraceable pop-up message even if your Internet Explorer is closed. And, even worse, a hacker can use the Windows Messenger Service to break into your computer and do all sort of nasty things "including installing programs, viewing, changing or deleting data, or creating new accounts with full privileges." [Source: Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-043 at http://tinyurl.com/r2j3]

By the way, you DON'T need to worry about the Windows Messenger Service if have a Mac, a *nix box, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or Windows ME, or Windows XP Service Pack 2. BUT, if you have Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP without Service Pack 2, and Windows 2003, you need to turn this little bugger off. Now.

I *HIGHLY* recommend this program for four reasons:

  1. It's free. Free is good.
  2. The Shoot the Messenger program is only 22 kilobytes in size. That's so small it's downright silly. You can download this program literally faster than you can read this sentence, even on the slowest modem connection on earth.
  3. Shoot the Messenger was created by Steve Gibson at Gibson Research, the guy behind ShieldsUp and SpinRite. Steve is probably one of the most trusted and respected computer gurus on the planet. Having Steve Gibson [through his Shoot the Messenger program] disable the Windows Messenger Service for you is like having Lance Armstrong fix your bike or Michael Schumaker fix your car.
  4. Downloading and running Shoot the Messenger keeps you from having to get your hands dirty by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Messenger ... blah blah blah.

Once you have downloaded Shoot the Messenger, just double-click on the shootthemessenger.exe icon.

A little window appears telling you if the Windows Messenger Service is running on your computer.

If it is, just click on the "Disable Messenger" button and then click on "Exit."

That's it. The Windows Messenger Service is now disabled, and your computer is now protected from both the spammers and the hackers who have been using the Windows Messenger Service to do nasty things to other people's computers.

Oh, and you can delete shootthemessenger.exe if you want. You don't need it any more.

How to SAFELY Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2

1. Get a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a CD-ROM.

Trust me on this one, folks: XP SP2 is so large that you don't want to try to download it over even the fastest Internet connection. Besides, when your computer crashes sometime in the future and you have to reinstall Windows, having XP SP2 on CD-ROM will speed your recovery process.

How can you get XP SP2 on CD-ROM? Well, go to the computer section of your nearest big box retailer and ask for a copy. Microsoft shipped massive amounts of free XP SP2 CD-ROMs to Circuit City, Best Buy, and places like that. All you have to do is ask.

If you can't find a copy of XP SP2 in your local tech store or, even worse, if your local tech store tries to sell it to you [something that happened to at least one Best Buy customer in the Chicago area a few weeks ago], hop on over to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/ en_us/default.mspx. This page lets you order the XP SP2 CD-ROM directly from Microsoft. Free.

2. Once you have the XP SP2 CD-ROM, scan your computer for viruses

Personal experience shows that unwanted stuff on your computer like viruses or spyware [see step 3] can wreck havoc on ANY software installation, especially a major operating system upgrade. And while you may think your current antivirus software is doing a good job of scanning your computer for and protecting your computer from viruses, over 60% of broadband users aren't running the latest version of their antivirus program. [Source: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/security?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs]

So, just to be extra safe, before you even THINK about putting that XP SP2 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, let's have Symantec scan your PC for viruses online. Open Internet Explorer and go to http://www.symantec.com/cgi-bin/securitycheck.cgi.

[Unfortunately, Symantec's free online virus checker only works in Internet Explorer.] When the page loads, click on the orange Go button. This opens a pop-up window. Click on the red Start button under Virus Detection to start the virus scan. You'll be asked if you want to install and run three small plug-ins. Click Yes all three times.

The scan will take a while, but it is well worth the wait. If Symantec says your virus status is safe, continue on to step three. But, if Symantec finds a problem, expect to spend a lot of time at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html downloading the appropriate removal tools.

3. Scan your computer for spyware and other malware

Spyware seems to be the number one cause of problems when upgrading to XP SP2. So, in addition to scanning your computer for viruses, you also need to scan it for spyware. But you need to make sure you are using the latest version of your antispyware program when you do this.

How? Well, in Spybot Search & Destroy, go to Help > About. There you'll see the version number. The latest version of Spybot is 1.3. If you have an older version, head on over to http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html and download the latest version.

If you have AdAware, look in the bottom right corner of the AdAware screen. If you don't see "AdAware SE Personal, Build 1.05," you don't have the latest version and you'll need to download a new copy at http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

Once you have the latest version of your antispyware program, check for updates and then scan your computer. If you find any spyware, nuke it.

4. Update your software firewall

If you are running a software firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate Personal Firewall, you may need to update your software firewall so that it will fully work with Windows XP SP2. This usually involves downloading a simple patch that you can get from your software firewall’s manufacturer's website.

5. Get the latest PC manufacturer updates for your computer

If you have a name-brand computer, check the manufacturer's web site and download any software or driver updates they recommend. For example, Dell recommends that its users update their BIOS before upgrading to XP SP2.

For a list of the XP SP2 upgrade sites for most of the major PC manufacturers, check out http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/oemlinks.mspx

If you can’t find your computer manufacturer’s web site, call the company or store that sold you your computer and ask them if they know of any issues with upgrading your make and model of computer to XP SP2. By waiting to install XP SP2 until today, you’ve given the folks in tech support enough time to figure out what computers upgrade well and what computers have issues.

Sloth pays.

6. Backup any files you cannot live without

If media and blog reports are any indication, you should be able to upgrade to XP SP2 without any major problems. But sometimes things go awry. That's life.

Just to be extra safe, make sure to copy ALL of the important stuff on your computer to a CD-ROM, DVD, thumb drive, external hard drive, or whatever. You can never have too many backups.

In particular, make sure to backup your:

  • Bank records and other financial information
  • Digital photographs
  • Software you purchased and downloaded from the Internet
  • Software you didn't purchase but still download from the Internet
  • Your illegal MP3s and legal iTunes files
  • Personal projects and other "My Documents" stuff
  • Your e-mail address book and calendar
  • Your enemies list
  • Your browser's bookmarks or favorites list

Again, you'll probably not need this backup. But you can never be too safe.

7. Make a system restore point

Yeah, I know. The XP SP2 installer does this for you automatically. Do it by hand just in case.

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
  • Choose Create a restore point.
  • Click Next.
  • In the Restore Point Description box, type something long and descriptive [like "18 November 2004 – Before I installed XP SP2"]
  • Click Create.
  • Once the restore point has been created, click Close.

8. Restart

No, I don't mean go back to step one. I mean restart your computer. It's usually a good idea to flush the decks, so to speak, before you install any major program or operating system upgrade on your computer.

Wait at least five minutes after you restart your computer before you proceed. That just gives all of those icons down in your task bar plenty of time to load and call home for updates.

You might also want to disable your antivirus program, but that's completely up to you. [I accidentally installed XP SP2 without first turning off my antivirus and nothing bad happ&%$()**NO CARRIER**]

9. Find a local guru

Step nine is probably the hardest step of them all.

If you follow steps one through eight, step nine is probably completely unnecessary. But, sometimes bad things happen to good people. And sometimes, although not often, XP SP2 installations go horribly awry. If that happens, you're going to want to talk to someone who can help you un-kludge your computer.

You are always welcome to send me email asking for assistance, but I have to warn you that I get so much email that it is almost impossible for me to keep up. I wish I was kidding, but it's now November 22nd, 2004, and I am currently working on answering the emails sent to me during the week of October 11th...FIVE weeks ago! If your computer goes kersplat during the XP SP2 installation process, you're probably going to want to speak to someone who can help you fix your computer in minutes not weeks. Hence my recommendation that you find a local guru who can help you if anything goes awry.

Again, if you follow steps one through eight, finding a local guru is probably completely unnecessary. But, as I have said throughout today's post, you can never be too safe.

10. Install XP SP2

You've prepped your system. You found a local guru who can help you if things go wrong. Now it's time to install XP SP2. Pop the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and follow the on-screen prompts.

That's it.

No, really. That's it. Pretty anticlimactic, isn't it?

Once the upgrade is done, you'll be asked to restart your computer.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows XP Service Pack 2.

11. Run Windows Update

After you have successfully installed XP SP2, immediately run Windows Update. There have been more than a few critical updates released since your XP SP2 disc was pressed, and you need to download those updates to ensure your computer is fully protected from the internet nasties.

12. Tweak XP SP2

Finally, after you've installed XP SP2 and run Windows Update, point your favorite web browser to http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2installed. This page contains dozens of handouts and videos covering topics such as configuring Internet Explorer's new pop-up blocker, using the new Windows Security Center, and so on. Plan on spending a little time here getting acquainted with the new security features in XP SP2.

Troubleshooting XP SP2

What if the XP SP2 installation doesn't go so smoothly on your computer? As I hinted at earlier, that's what the local guru is for.

But, if you want to try to fix things yourself, check out http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2getinstall. This page has links to some of the more popular Microsoft Knowledge Base articles to help you diagnose and fix the most common XP SP2 setup and installation issues. If that doesn't help, try a Google search. Chances are you aren't the first person to have this problem.

And, if push comes to shove, you can always uninstall XP SP2 and roll back your system to that restore point you created back in step seven. You can find the instructions on how to do this at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875355

I hope this helps!

How to Protect Yourself From Daytime Sleepiness on Your Commute and at Work

Working-class America has a dangerous problem on its hands: As we squeeze more into our days—work, families, gym memberships, full social calendars, and longer commutes—we're becoming more sleep-deprived, which can cause problems on the job or during the ride home.

"Sleep has always been considered negotiable," says Ralph Downey III, PhD, chief of sleep medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. “Our activities are priorities over sleep until it's too late—and we drive off the road.”

commute-sleep
A nap on the train might help fight sleep deprivation, but be aware of your surroundings.

Jaime Marrero, 48, of Manati, Puerto Rico, knows this all too well. "I've woken up from the sound of my wheels on road markers on several occasions," says the former applications engineer, a dad who used to endure a 55-mile commute. "At work, I'd fall asleep in seminars. A peer would kick me to keep me awake." (Marrero was diagnosed with sleep apnea five years ago, and a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine has since eliminated his problems.)

Does sleepiness affect your commute or workday? Here are four common scenarios.

Drowsy driving
Tired drivers have delayed reaction times, or they doze at the wheel, so driving after a night of poor sleep is a dangerous idea. "One-quarter of people drive fairly sleepy, and a small percentage have wrecks," says David Davila, MD, medical director of the Baptist Health Sleep Center in Little Rock, Ark., and a National Sleep Foundation spokesperson.

Some people have trouble getting home, says Stuart F. Quan, MD, visiting professor of medicine in the division of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Highway driving is a boring, semiautomatic task. You'd tend to fall asleep."

Missing your stop
Sleepy commuters who use mass transit can inadvertently sleep through their bus or train stops. “The depth of your sleep is the reason you miss the stop,” says Downey. "If you sleep more than 20 minutes, you have slow-wave sleep, which is harder to wake up out of. You have no perception of what's going on in your environment."

There are pros and cons to taking a nap during your commute. "If you're sleep-deprived and you have an hour commute, you made up an hour of sleep," says Downey. But long, late naps can affect your ability to fall asleep at bedtime, causing a cycle of sleep deprivation.

Falling asleep on the job
Take a dimly lit room, add a bland PowerPoint presentation and tired employees, and you've got the perfect setting for unintentional nodding off. "In our brains, we have a sleep drive that's fighting the wake drive, which tries to keep us awake," says Downey. "In a boring meeting, your sleep drive is pushing to come out. There's no stimulus for your wake drive to come out, unless someone shocks you."

Relying on sugar and caffeine
Who, during a sleepy moment, hasn't downed coffee or grabbed chocolate to keep himself attentive? Sugar and caffeine can provide a burst of wakefulness, but it's short-lived. "Sleep eventually wins," says Downey. "Society needs to get to a point where we recognize that we need to sleep instead of buying a Mars bar."

To avoid work-related sleep problems, try these solutions:

  • Work out. "Exercising in the morning increases alertness, which can help with your commute," says Dr. Davila. If you're sleepy after work, exercise before commuting home (between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.), for "alertness enhancement" and improved nighttime sleeping.

  • Form a sleep carpool. Ask a friend to take turns driving and napping on alternate days. "This can work as long as the driver doesn't need to be stimulated by your conversation to stay awake," says Downey.

  • Change your schedule. "Talk to your boss about telecommuting or flexible hours" says Dr. Quan. "If you work 10-hour days, get enough sleep on those days to safely go to and from work."

  • Seek sunshine. "In the morning, get as much bright light exposure as possible," says Dr. Davila. Get off the train a stop early and walk to work, take a walk around your block before driving to work, or park a few blocks away from the office.

  • Sleep on the clock. If you have permission, taking a nap during work hours is useful, says Dr. Quan. "Even 15 minutes will help a person get through the day." If you commute on a train or bus, that might also be an opportunity to slip in a quick nap—but in either case, set an alarm so you won't oversleep.

  • Prepare for the drive. Drink a cup of coffee or take a 20-minute nap, then drive home, says Downey. "Those are the best antidotes we know of to decrease drowsy driving." If you still feel your eyes drooping when you're on the road, pull over: Once you're starting to nod off, the safest thing to do is get out of the car.

  • Skip late-night TV. Go to bed at 10:30, says Downey. If you're addicted to The Daily Show, record it and watch it during breakfast, so you aren't out of the loop at the water cooler.

  • Talk to your doctor. It's normal to have a few stressful days at the office or feel overworked and sleep-deprived every so often, but if you notice that you're not feeling better after a number of weeks—or that your sleepiness has become an everyday, all-the-time feeling—you may need to be screened for a sleep disorder. Conditions such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy can make people more prone to falling asleep during daily activities. Or, if it's really your sleep habits and schedule that need adjusting, your doctor may guide you in making lifestyle changes that can help you rest easier.
